On August 14th, a magnitude 7.2 earthquake struck Haiti about 80 miles west of Back2Back’s campus and partnering children’s homes. No structural damage was present as a result of the earthquake, but staff and children did feel the effects, even 80 miles away.

In response to the earthquake, and how the children might be feeling following it, staff provided a small training. Many of the children in Haiti lost family members and/or homes as a result of the 2010 earthquake, and this impacts how they process another natural disaster.

Kerby Abelard, Back2Back staff, led a small training during a weeklong retreat for the children, and gave them tips on how to remain safe during an earthquake. “We discussed the risks of natural disasters, how to understand what is happening in the moment, and how to provide first aid care in the event they are trapped beneath something heavy,” explained Kerby. He led them in simulations to teach them how to help those around them in the event of danger or someone getting hurt.

Staff cannot always control what happens around the children they faithfully care for, but they can help each child react positively in dire situations, and equip them with lessons to use practically in the moment. Together, we are providing care for today and hope for every tomorrow.
