Patients who had total joint arthroplasty in the month following COVID-19 infections were at an increased risk of postoperative thromboembolic complications, including deep vein thrombosis or venous embolism.
Enrico M. Forlenza MD, and his Rush University Medical Center colleagues analyzed data of 31,453 patients undergoing total hip or knee replacement between Jan.1, 2018, and October 31, 2020. Within the cohort, COVID-19 positivity was found in 2% of patients (n=616) before surgery.
