JAMA Surgery published results that showed the use of CT scans of the cervical spine for pediatric blunt trauma patients has increased. However, there is a wide variation in the clinical evaluation. This may lead to an overdiagnosis.
Case M. Luckhurst MD and his colleagues examined the results of 9,389 pediatrics aged 3 or younger who were admitted to hospital after blunt trauma between January 2007, and July 2017. Researchers performed a descriptive analysis on the population, and then analyzed imaging patterns and injury patterns in order to develop a predictive model.
