
Most popular weight loss drugs are gaining popularity in the media and on social media. They have been praised for their ability to control diabetes and help people lose weight. There is now evidence that one drug, semaglutide may also reduce the risk of heart disease death in some patients. Semaglutide can be found under the brands Wegovy Ozempic and Rybelsus. This trial focused on Wegovy – semaglutide 2.4mg injectable, currently approved for weight control. The results of a much-anticipated study, sponsored by semaglutide’s maker Novo Nordisk, investigating the drug’s effects on the heart were presented at the annual meeting of the American Heart Association in Philadelphia and published in the New England Journal of Medicine.

In the study, more than 17,000 overweight or obese people with a BMI of 27 or higher were included. They did not have diabetes, but had a history or heart attack, stroke or circulatory symptoms.
